Soybeans – A Simple and Fresh Snack!

Edamame is the most common term used to describe mung bean legumes is the most popular choice in Asian food. Mung beans belong to a family of legumes called the buckwheat family. Green Soybean Edamame beans are cultivated in the soil along the slopes of the Wakame Alps in Japan, China, and Korea. In fact, these beans thrive there so well that they actually are able to spread to other areas that aren’t cultivated. Mung beans are among the most widely consumed legumes in Asia. They are used as a filling in rice dishes, and also sprinkled over raw vegetables or cooked into salads.

Edamame, a legume, is made from a dried pod. The pod was traditionally used as cooking medium. However, the latest technology allows pod harvesters to utilize the pods’ seeds without damaging the pods. The green soybeans contained in the pods are then cooked and used as inulin, a type of starch that is made from starch and proteins in corn. This form is much easier to digest and doesn’t have the same allergenic characteristics as the bean it is derived from. Because the allergen has been eliminated, thebeans are not banned in certain countries or restricted in their consumption.


The popularity of edamame beans as a food of choice has increased because it’s an alternative to cooking ingredients like wheat gluten, corn starch and tapioca starch. Different cultures across the globe have utilized the herbaceous plant to give flavor, color and a rich texture to numerous dishes. The nutty taste of cooked edamame beans is enjoyed by many people especially when combined with spicy foods and fish. Edamame can be substituted in place of corn starch in a dish that calls for corn starch, or cooked separately from the other ingredients. Edamame’s versatility makes it an excellent choice to add flavor and texture in soups as well as salads, sauces and sauces in addition to other dishes.

Edamame beans can be put into a microwave-safe bag and cooked in your microwave or stovetop. There are a variety of ways to preserve your edamame like drying, pickingling drying dehydrating, freezing and even preserving them inside airtight containers. If you’re looking to freeze your soybeans there are a few options. One option is to put the soybeans into a bag or vacuum pouch and then place the pouch into the freezer. Make sure the pouch is not placed in the freezer until it is completely frozen. Another option is to put the soybeans in a bag and then add water. The bag should be sealed and kept in the freezer for at least a day.

Pickling soybeans requires that you remove the green pod from the pod, then cut off the soybeans that are green. A delicious snack idea is to put cooked edamame into a baggy and add low-fat cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and tuna salad. After you have put the tuna salad top put the edamame in the bag and add some aioli sauce to taste. It is easy to freeze and can be quickly reheated.
